Common errors in English – Distinguish

Usage of the word ‘distinguish’.

There are many common errors in the English Language. Though some may be obvious to many who listen, some errors are hard to identify. The word ‘distinguish’ used wrongly, is one of the common errors in English. There are two ways in which the word distinguish can be used in a sentence.

1. Can you distinguish between a car and a van?
2. Can you distinguish a car from a van?

Note the use of the word ‘and’ when ‘between’ is used in the first example.
